When to visit Saint Barthélemy?
The decision rests on several criteria. Climate score, tourist crowds and feasible activities.
Saint Barthélemy ("Saint-Barth" or "St. Barts" in English), French overseas community in the Lesser Antilles: 25 km², 10,000 inhabitants, one of the smartest and most expensive destinations in the Caribbean (the "tropical Saint-Tropez"). March is my favourite month (8.7/10): 24-25°C, 25% rain, sea at 26°C, end of the high season. From December to April, it's the tourist high season: 24-26°C, 25-42% rain, extreme hotel prices (Hôtel Manapany or Cheval Blanc Saint-Barth 1500-5000€/night, private villas 5000-50,000€/week), bookings 1 year ahead for Christmas/New Year (when the yacht of Bezos/Murdoch and the Russians dock at Gustavia, paparazzi on the lookout). From June to November, it's the cyclone season: 35-59% rainfall, real hurricane risk (Irma 2017 category 5 devastated the island at 70%), many hotels close September-October. Highlights: Gustavia (capital, yacht harbour, former Swedish colony 1784-1878 = French name/Scandinavian influence in the architecture, luxury boutiques Hermès/Cartier/Vuitton), Beaches: Saline (wild, no facilities), Gouverneur (wild), Saint-Jean (lively with Eden Rock, iconic hotel, spectacular plane landing just above), Anse Colombier (accessible only on foot 30 min or boat, calm beach), Shell Beach (shells, in Gustavia centre), Lorient (surf), Flamands. Landing at St. Jean = one of the most dangerous in the world (650m runway, abrupt descent above the col de la Tourmente). Try grilled lobster, accras, ti-punch. Flight from Saint-Martin (10 min by plane) after direct flight Paris-Saint-Martin.
