Our verdict
Hakone, 50 miles south-west of Tokyo, is Japan's most famous spa town: view of Mount Fuji on a clear day, hot springs (onsen), Lake Ashi. August is my favorite month (7.7/10): 64-75°F, 58% rain, cool temperatures at altitude (Hakone at 2,300 ft).
