Our verdict
Sapporo is Japan's 5th city: capital of Hokkaido, 1.9 million inhabitants, modern grid-pattern city (rare in Japan), eponymous beer. July is my favorite month (8.2/10): 64-77°F, 40% rain, ideal temperatures when the rest of Japan is stifling, festivals (Sapporo Summer Festival late July, Sapporo Bon Odori in August).
